Luke Shaw has confessed that he took a significant risk with his fitness on the instruction of the Manchester United.

Shaw, who was ecstatic to be included in England's Euro 2024 squad despite having spent the last four months of the Premier League sidelined due to a hamstring injury, admits he felt pressured to play at Luton in February by United manager Erik ten Hag, despite being injured.

The full-back pointed fingers at the medical team at Old Trafford for his plight but also admitted that his own eagerness to recover in time for United's triumphant FA Cup final against Manchester City last month may have additionally contributed to his physical setback.

Shaw explained: "I felt something against Aston Villa and came off at half-time. I didn't train the whole week and when the scan came back, there wasn't too much there.

"I then trained the day before the game (at Luton) - and if the manager asks me to play, I'm never going to say 'no.'

"But I shouldn't have played. It's kind of everyone's fault. Partly my fault, partly the medical staff. I think everyone would admit that."

Ten Hag cited an array of injuries as the reason behind United's dismal season that ended with them in eighth place in the Premier League.

Whether winning the FA Cup against City at Wembley will be sufficient to secure Ten Hag's role is uncertain, however, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe ordered an inquiry into why the club's roster of injuries was so severe.

Shaw, with a tenure of over 10 years at United following his move from Southampton, was left heartbroken when his allegiance to the club was called into question as he was deemed fit for the Euros.

He shared: "I got a few people coming up to me, saying 'how can you not be fit for United but fit for England?' No-one knew the situation. I was actually very close to returning to team training.

"I was pushing to try and get back for the games and the final - and I think I pushed too hard. I came back too quickly and ended up getting another injury in my hamstring.

"It was three weeks from the final and they (the doctors) said it was a six-week injury. It's been disappointing for me, but I want to do everything I can, first and foremost, for United.

"I have always said that the United team comes before everything for me - and that will never change."
