Terry is hoping to train with Chelsea today and be fit to face Portsmouth in the FA Cup final on Saturday, but only after first suffering a major injury scare that saw him make a frantic dash to hospital. He suffered a blow to his right foot as he landed during an intensive training session with Chelsea yesterday, sparking
fears the curse of the metatarsal had struck England’s World Cup hopes
again.
Centre-half Terry was sent for a CT scan
with his right foot – which he broke against Arsenal three years ago –
in a protective boot. X-rays provided an upbeat medical bulletin,
though.
“I took a slight knock in training but,
with such an important match on Saturday, the right course of action was
to put a protective boot on my right foot and have a CT scan,” said
Terry, who hopes to complete a historic Double by lifting the FA Cup
against former manager Avram Grant and Portsmouth at the weekend.
Terry’s season has been overshadowed by revelations about his affair with the ex-partner of his former best friend Wayne Bridge
“The scan has shown there is no break and I am hoping
to train tomorrow if not Friday and, of course, play in the FA Cup
final.”
England have been undone by broken
metatarsals before, with Wayne Rooney’s participation in the last World
Cup hampered by such an injury and his impact in Euro 2004 halted by the
problem.
The 2002 World Cup also saw David
Beckham and Gary Neville suffer injuries.
Terry’s
season has been overshadowed by revelations about his affair with the
ex-partner of his former best friend Wayne Bridge, which resulted in
Capello stripping him of the England captaincy.
His
importance to the cause remains crucial, however, and last night’s news
will have come as a massive relief to Capello just a day after he had
announced his 30-man World Cup squad.
England
could not have drafted in a replacement if Terry had been ruled out
before they name their final 23-man party on June 1 as they must choose
that reduced squad from the 30 names unveiled on Tuesday.
Capello must also wait before discovering if
Manchester City’s Gareth Barry can go to South Africa. He has an ankle
injury and still has to prove his fitness.
