STEVE McClaren heaped praise on his players and played down his own influence after leading FC Twente to an historic first Dutch championship yesterday.
Former England boss McClaren hailed the achievement as “more than a miracle” after his side’s 2-0 win at NEC Breda ensured Ajax were beaten to the Eredivisie title by one point.
Twente finished the season with 27 wins and two defeats from their 34 games and the title will go some way towards restoring McClaren’s reputation, battered as it was during his disastrous spell in the England hotseat.
“Today we made history. It’s more than a miracle,” said McClaren. “I said at the beginning of the season that I don’t know if we have a team. I couldn’t tell. They grew and grew, they deserve it.
“The players have been under pressure from day one. Ajax kept coming, kept coming and we’ve kept winning. Today was perfect for them.”
