Manchester United need to sign a player like Wayne Rooney who can get the best out of his team-mates, according to Rio Ferdinand. United legend Ferdinand believes the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes need a Rooney-type figure to pull them into shape and call them out when they do not live up to the standards required.
"They need a sergeant major in that team that when they give it away or they get a bit lax on the ball, or when in their positioning they're a little bit lax out of possession, it might be a step short of where they should be, they need someone in and around them screaming, drilling them.
"[United have] no one, they haven't got that player."
United will appoint a new permanent manager this summer, which is the next time the club will be able to spend in the transfer market on new signings.

Ferdinand says his old team are in need of a player like the club's record goalscorer Rooney who can bring the best out of the players around him.
He continued: "I don't even want to see players coming out on social media or in interviews and pointing the finger or anything like that - just get it done man.
"That's where I go back to my point about shouting at people and getting onto people.
"When you're shouted at and you're getting screamed at, we will talk about Wayne Rooney later, but that was a big part of our relationship and as to why we were successful and drove each other on, because we argued and shouted at each other constantly.
"Every day, every game, because you want the best for each other.

"Sometimes players need that shouting and that talking to but I don't see anyone in the Man United team who's got the confidence or got that trait in them to grab hold of people."
Speculation continues around the future of Pogba and whether the club's next manager will have him at his disposal next season.
That is because the Frenchman's contract expires this summer.
Fernandes is likely to stay at United though, as his deal doesn't come to an end until 2025 with the option of a further year.
