Wayne Thomas takes rare chance
Southampton 2, Ipswich 1
WAYNE Thomas struck his second goal in four and a half years to fire Southampton into the next round.
The defender was drafted into the Saints’ starting line-up because new signings Dan Seaborne, Jose Fonte, and Jon Otsemobor were cup-tied.
But he grabbed his chance in spectacular style by setting Alan Pardew’s League One side on course for a shock victory over Championship Ipswich with a stunning right-foot drive from 30 yards.
Michail Antonio completed the victory by crashing home a second just three minutes after appearing as a 70th-minute substitute.
Pablo Counago raised Ipswich’s comeback hopes with a 90th-minute strike but the visitors were unable to conjure an equaliser despite an injury-time assault on the home goal.
That left Ipswich boss Roy Keane facing an FA Cup embarrassment as his side sank to only their second defeat in 16 games.
