Meanwhile, on social media, Magpies icon Shearer was furious with Shelvey for his antics, hitting out at the Newcastle star.
"Stupid stupid stupid red card," he said, accompanied with an angry emoji.
Newcastle did pull back another goal as Eric Dier turned into his own net but Tottenham held on to secure all three points with a 3-2 victory.
Yet the game would be overshadowed by an unfortunate incident in the stands that saw the game suspended in the first half.
A Newcastle supporter, unfortunately, suffered a suspected heart attack as fans and stewards rushed to their attention.

Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon was the first player to alert referee Andre Marriner to the incident before the referee led the players off the field.
Reguilon has now revealed exactly what happened during the moment of panic as he shared the man of the match award with Eric Dier for their actions during the chaos.
"I saw one guy lying down, and one was going like this [chest compressions].
"I was very nervous and I went to the referee and said 'we cannot play like this, stop the match.'
"The referee and the nice man out there stop the match.
"Now, I think it's okay, right? That's more important than everything."
The fan is now understood to be in a stable condition in hospital.
