Tottenham chief Daniel Levy 'furious' with Harry Kane as forward hit with two-weeks fine
Harry Kane may have committed his future with the club, but that does not mean some of his actions were without consequences.
Nuno delighted Harry Kane staying at Tottenham
Harry Kane's late reporting for pre-season training prompted Tottenham Hotspur to fine him two-weeks wages, according to reports. The England captain has been linked with a move all summer but is now staying in north London.
The Athletic have claimed the England captain was docked two weeks wages, equivalent to £460,000, for delaying his delayed return to Spurs training earlier in the summer.
While Manchester City tried desperately to prise the 28-year-old away from Spurs, Kane had left the club seething having allegedly not turned up for training two days in a row.
However, the transfer saga hit a dramatic crescendo with Kane announcing to his 11.5m Instagram followers that he was going to stay with the North Londoners this season.
“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100 per cent focused on helping the team achieve success,” he posted.
“It was incredible to see the reception from Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks.”
Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted the club were able to retain Kane's services.
“It’s great news, fantastic for everybody. We are all very happy. He’s one of the best players in the world. We are all delighted to have more options,” the Portuguese boss said in his pre-match press conference for Spurs' Europa Conference League tie with Pacos de Ferreira.
“It says we are able to keep one of the best players in the world — this is important.
“All the players have to show this belief that together we can make good things.”
It closed the book on a difficult chapter in the striker's career.
Kane first expressed his desire to depart the Tottenham Hotspur stadium just before the end of last season, when he did an interview with Gary Neville saying he wanted to compete for trophies.
He later stated his hopes for a transfer to be completed before the commencement of the European Championships in June.
However, the wheels of any potential transfer had barely got moving by the time he captained England to the final where they were defeated at Wembley by Italy.
Kane was furious a supposed "gentlemen's agreement," allowing the striker to leave the club if they failed to qualify for the Champions League, was not upheld.
Manchester City were very keen in adding the mercurial striker to their arsenal of attacking options, but could not convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell.
The Athletic also reported Pep Guardiola's side tabled bids of £75m with £25m of add-ons, before submitting one final Hail Mary of an offer of £100m with £20m of add-ons.
Unfortunately for The Citizens, their long and public chasing of the striker has concluded with Levy on the winning side.
The reigning champions are reportedly chasing Cristiano Ronaldo, whose future is also uncertain coming into the final days of the transfer window.
