Arsenal have now won four matches in a row in all competitions, with Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completing the 2-0 extra time win over Newcastle.
In his post-match press conference, Arteta was pessimistic about Martinelli's injury.
"I am gutted," Arteta said. "I was in my office before the game and one of the medical staff came in and said he twisted his ankle.
"He was in tears and in a lot of pain. We're going to see how he is but he didn't look good.

"He was in pain. He's a character that he wants to play the next game, hopefully it's not too serious."
While Arsenal await results for a scan, Martinelli's chances of being fit for upcoming matches look to be in doubt.
The Gunners host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Thursday before Newcastle return to the Emirates the following Monday in a league fixture.
Arteta hopes for a further update on Martinelli by Monday.

"I hope so [by Monday]," he continued.
"We really want to know what's going on. He's a character that says he wants to play the next game, that he doesn't care that he can handle pain, but I don't know.
"Hopefully there is nothing too serious but to start with it didn't look too good."
Arsenal will find out their fourth round opponents at Monday's draw, as well as who they could play in the fifth round.
