Chelsea: Lampard's defensive coaching questioned by Cross
Chelsea reportedly made an approach to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona before deciding to sign Edouard Mendy in the transfer window. Signing another goalkeeper appeared to be a top priority for Frank Lampard heading into the summer.
Kepa Arrizabalaga had failed to convince Lampard that he'd be the regular first-choice goalkeeper moving forward during his first season in charge.
The Spaniard was at fault for a number of errors with Lampard ultimately dropping him on two separate occasions for a period of games, including the FA Cup final.
Chelsea soon begun the hunt for a possible replacement, but it soon became clear that Kepa leaving the club would be difficult.
The Blues were not keen to take a huge hit on the record £72m they paid to sign Kepa two years ago and there was little interest from around Europe anyway.

It was evident that any new goalkeeper would come in to compete with Kepa, as well as Willy Caballero.
Lampard also repeatedly spoke of his determination to stick with Kepa at the start of the campaign, despite his calamitous error in the defeat to Liverpool last month.
But Edouard Mendy was soon brought in to the club, taking Chelsea's spending for the summer close to £250million.
And he made his league debut in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace for their first clean sheet of the season.
Petr Cech is said to have played a huge role on Chelsea pursuing a deal for Mendy, but he seemingly wasn't their first choice.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea were in communication with Ter Stegen’s representatives to try and secure his signature.
It is claimed that Chelsea were trying to convince the German shot-stopper not to sign a renewal at Barcelona.
The 28-year-old has just two years left on his contract and he also attracted interest from Juventus and Inter Milan.
