But the energetic midfielder has since joined his team-mate and is gearing up for the trip to Aston Villa tomorrow.
"It was genuine," Lampard said of Kante's fears. "I was very sympathetic. He wanted to be clear with how it was going to work.
"That’s been sorted out. He’s been training with the group for a while. He’s happy and as fit as anyone else."
Lampard is hoping to get his transfer business done early this year and has already captured Ajax ace Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The latter completed his move earlier this week and will link up with the squad when the Bundesliga wraps up at the end of the month.
Lampard said: "He is clearly a player we’ve liked. I have followed him for a long time myself, just as a talented player, even before I had this job.
"As a club, clearly we went for him and he will certainly strengthen us in my opinion. He has huge talent, he has had a fantastic season this year but before that as well.
"Where we couldn’t do as much business in the last couple of windows for whatever reasons, it has given us the chance to see some youth have more time in the team but we were very clear that we want to improve, and Timo Werner is a signing we feel will improve us."
