Newcastle: Pundit discusses targeting 'big name players'
Newcastle have received a boost in their reported attempt to sign Edinson Cavani this summer. According to French outlet Le10 Sport, Paris Saint-Germain are not expected to offer the Uruguayan a new contract, meaning he will be free to walk away from the club on July 1.
Cavani is one of the players Newcastle have been strongly linked with.
The 34-year-old striker has become a club icon at PSG, having broken the club's all-time goalscoring record.
But with the Ligue 1 champions keen to press on with a deal to sign Mauro Icardi, sporting director Leonardo has apparently decided against giving Cavani an extension.
This opens the door for other clubs to come in and poach him for nothing, with Newcastle believed to be near the front of the line.

The Magpies are set to be bought by a Saudi-backed consortium in the coming weeks, and are expected to go on a summer spending spree once the window opens.
While they have been linked with multiple big-money signings, they have also been tipped to bring in top-quality free agents.
Willian and Cavani have been linked, with the latter reportedly one of their top targets.
They'll face competition, however, as Inter Milan are apparently plotting a move.
