Manchester United have shortlised Boca Juniors star Agustin Almendra as one of several midfield transfer targets. United want to strengthen their options in the area with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after two new central midfielders.
Express Sport understands that the Red Devils are in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal for Bruno Fernandes after moves for James Maddison and Jack Grealish looked unlikely to materialise this month.
United have also looked at Donny van de Beek, with Ajax slapping a £50m price tag on the playmaker, who starred in their shock run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
Solskjaer is currently without first-choice midfield pair Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba due to injury and his former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand offered the Norwegian some transfer advice last week.
During a Twitter Q&A, the pundit said United should sign Boca midfielder Almendra as a “wildcard” transfer.

Solskjaer has been holding “open” transfer talks with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward this month.
When Solskjaer was asked whether he is forthright enough with Woodward, he replied: “Of course I am. Ask him if I am.
“Of course we have got open discussions and of course we're open and honest and we talk.
"We are building towards something and I'm almost getting bored myself talking about this, and the fans will definitely be bored listening to me talk about what we do have as a vision and a plan.

"I have those conversations with Ed all the time and we are looking at how we are going to look in one month's time, five months' time, in the longer period.
"He knows my feelings and we know our feelings. I am very happy with these players."
