Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about United’s transfer plans after their 3-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, with the Red Devils boss insisting he doesn’t want to weaken his side this month.
"We can't weaken ourselves, we need to strengthen ourselves if any movement is going to happen," he said.
When specifically asked about Young’s future and whether he’ll stay at Old Trafford, Solskjaer added: "I don't know. You have got to ask Ash.
"For me, it is about focusing on the next game."
Ex-United midfielder Darren Fletcher was quizzed about the Red Devils’ plans this month, with the pundit urging Solskjaer to spend.
"I think so," he told Sky Sports when asked if United need to strengthen in January.
"Seeing that tonight, you take Harry Maguire out of the team, Paul Pogba isn't there, Scott McTominay, all of a sudden, it's a light squad anyway, but they look young, naive, weak and I think the club will look to bring someone in.
"They won't buy anyone for the sake of it but I'm sure they will be active to try and bring someone in to try to help these young players."
United are back in action on Saturday afternoon against Norwich in the Premier League (3pm kick off).
The Red Devils are hoping to bounce back from their disappointing defeat against rivals City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, with Pep Guardiola’s men cruising to a 3-1 win.
