How Liverpool have fared against Champions League opponents Atletico Madrid in the past
Liverpool have been drawn against Atletico Madrid in the next round of the Champions League.
Liverpool will face a tricky last-16 Champions League tie against La Liga giants Atletico Madrid after the draw was made on Friday. The Reds, who are the defending champions, booked their place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg earlier in the week. Liverpool are favourites to progress given their exceptional form so far this season but Atletico won’t be pushovers, with Diego Someone the king of masterminding his team’s through to the latter stages of the competition. So how have they done in the past? Well they’ve met on four occasions. We now take a look back at how those matches played out.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (April 2010)
Liverpool travelled to Spain back in 2010 aiming to beat Atletico Madrid at the Vincent Calderon in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
But they went home with a defeat, with former Manchester United star Diego Forlan scoring the only goal of the game.
That left the Reds with all to do.
And they were to suffer an agonising exit when the teams met in the return fixture…

Liverpool 2-1 Atletico Madrid (April 2010)
Liverpool knew they needed a good start when they met Atletico Madrid in the return leg.
And they got what they wanted, with Alberto Aquilani finding the net in the first half.
The game went to extra-time and Liverpool got in front through Yossi Benayoun.
But their hearts were broken by a late goal from Forlan, who struck in the 102nd minute to send the La Liga side through.

Liverpool 1-1 Atletico Madrid (November 2008)
Liverpool and Atletico Madrid met in the Champions League group stages in 2008.
And, had it not been for a late Steven Gerrard penalty, the Reds would have slumped to defeat at Anfield.
The Liverpool captain at the time converted a late spot-kick after he was fouled inside the area by Mariano Pernia.
That had come after Maxi Rodriguez had put Atletico in front.
Atletico Madrid 1-1 Liverpool (October 2008)
Once again, Liverpool’s match with Atletico Madrid ended in a draw.
The Reds went in front early on through Robbie Keane, who had arrived from Tottenham mere months previously.
But they were forced to settle for a point after Simao Sambrosa levelled the scores.
Simao would be linked with Liverpool throughout the rest of his career and came close to making the move to Anfield.
A deal eventually broke down, however.
