Jamie Carragher picks out ‘massive worry’ over Unai Emery as Arsenal fans demand sack
Jamie Carragher has outlined Arsenal’s defensive frailty as Unai Emery’s biggest flaw.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery’s failure to create a solid defensive team is his biggest flaw, according to Jamie Carragher.
The Liverpool hero has given his thoughts on where the former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain boss has gone wrong at the Emirates, and picked out their leaky defence.
The ex-England defender reckons that being a defensively-sound side is one of the ‘easiest’ things a manager can do, and questioned why Emery has failed to sort that out.
"Arsenal fans don't care about what he's done,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“They care about what they are looking at and what they have seen at Arsenal for almost 18 months.
"You [Gary Neville] say he's a great coach, but I don't think a great coach allows his team to concede 20 or 25 shots per game consistently.
"A great coach must find a way to change that and stop that.
“I know what you're saying about David Luiz and Sokratis [Papastathopoulos] not being great players, but the easiest thing for anybody to coach is to set a team up defensively and stop the opposition.
“The tough thing is to go and make them create and open a game up.
"So that is a massive worry for me, that he can't stop that."
Emery said after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Southampton left Arsenal eight points behind the top four: "We are disappointed and frustrated about the result.
“I understand the supporters feel the same but the players' attitude was good.
“We had our moments to win the match but over 90 minutes only the 20 minutes in the second half we deserved to score.
"It was not a good performance. We lost our opportunity to show we have improved but we haven't improved.
“The supporters helped us and had our back. But we didn't show the capacity to win.
"My job is to analyse and find solutions. We need to recover confidence. One good result will give us that confidence to achieve that performance."
