Glenn Hoddle on why Chelsea star Tammy Abraham will be disappointed with Frank Lampard
Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham will be disappointed with Frank Lampard according to Glenn Hoddle.
Chelsea: Frank Lampard says he is 'proud' of win over Ajax
Chelsea beat Ajax 1-0 thanks to Michy Batshuayi’s late winner, but one Blues star will have been left disappointed.
Tammy Abraham was withdrawn by Frank Lampard after 71 minutes after failing to add to his first Champions League goal from the win over Lille, and Glenn Hoddle thinks that would have left him feeling down.
“He’s [Batshuayi] played his way into maybe the team, maybe the squad but you can rely on him, that’s what the manager knows now," Hoddle told BT Sport.
“He’s got [Olivier] Giroud up his sleeve as well.
“But it could be also a good performance for Abraham.
“Because he’s sitting there now thinking, ‘I was disappointed at being taken off. He’s won the game for us.’
“He’s now got to elevate his game, he’s got to stay right at the top where he was.
“It’s all round been a fantastic night for Frank.”
Tammy Abraham shows off his skills in Chelsea training
Hoddle reckons that although the 22-year-old will have been left disappointed with his substitution, it could fire him on to improve even further after a fantastic start to the season with Chelsea.
Giroud recently revealed his frustration at his lack of playing time under Lampard, and his manager understands why.
"I had a good chat with Oli before he went away and I always respect all the players, but particularly the players of that age of low thirties," Lampard said.
"I love his professionalism. He was bang on when he spoke to me, and also with his quotes when away with France.
“He shouldn't be happy and accept not playing.
“That's what good players do.
“I think, as I said to Oli, he will get his games and be a big influence for us.
"At the moment, because of how Tammy is playing, there hasn't been the minutes, so I would happily sit down with Oli in January. But that is a long way away. I want him here."
