Rio Ferdinand explains what cost Manchester United three points against Liverpool
A late goal from Adam Lallana denied Manchester United a much-needed victory at Old Trafford.
Rio Ferdinand believes a lapse in concentration cost Manchester United three points against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils led their bitter rivals 1-0 until the 85th minute of a thoroughly enthralling match at Old Trafford.
Substitute Adam Lallana rescued a point for the visitors by stealing in at the back post and tapping home a cross from Andy Robertson from just inside the six-yard box.
Lallana’s equaliser sucked the life out United and their fans and invited wave after wave of pressure from the Reds.
United, however, stood firm and held out for a point, which ended the visitors’ 100 per cent start to the season.
Three points would’ve greatly relieved the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has only tasted victory five times in 22 matches since being appointed as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor.
And Ferdinand believes the Norwegian would’ve picked up his sixth win since being given the job on a permanent basis had his troops been more switched on.
“Lack of concentration,” the former Manchester United defender tweeted after Lallana’s equaliser.
Lack of concentration
After the final whistle, Ferdinand added: “Unsettled Liverpool, made it difficult for them.
"Seeing out games like that when put under pressure is where you earn ya money. Wasn’t to be today but elements to be positive about.
"A confident Rashford. Willing Runners on the break. Aggressive with & without ball.
Ferdinand was also impressed by United’s first-half showing, saying: “Impressive 1st half from @ManUtd.
“Shown more desire & willingness to be on the front foot.
“@LFC been sloppy, however created some good chances. VAR talking point once again... Massive 45 minutes remaining!”
United will look to get back in the win column on Thursday night when they travel to Serbia to take on Partizan Belgrade in their second Europa League group game of the season.
