Manchester United have endured a torrid start to the Premier League, but where are they predicted to finish in the final table at the end of the season?
Tottenham in worse position than Man Utd says pundit
Manchester United are currently suffering their worst start to a league campaign in 30 years, with the Red Devils languishing 12th in the Premier League table.
Defeats to Crystal Palace, West Ham and Newcastle have heaped the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the Old Trafford club are without a win in their last five matches across all competitions.
Injuries have played a part in the underwhelming start, causing United to turn to academy graduates in order to plug the gaps in their threadbare squad.
And Marcus Rashford’s struggles in front of goal have cast light on Solskjaer’s refusal to replace Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the summer transfer window.
However, new data from Infogol suggests things could be set to turn around for United – based on their on-pitch performances.
The latest study has generated expected current positions for every top-flight side, as well as their predicted finishing positions at the end of the campaign.
Infogol have used their unique algorithm to quantify the quality of any given scoring opportunity, giving each chance a probability of being scored.
The higher the probability, the better the chance, so the ‘Expected Goals’ method provides a descriptive look back at individual games and helps give an insight into future performance.
So with regards to United, they were expected to be third in the Premier League right now based on the chances Solskjaer’s side have created.
Two missed penalties will have contributed to this high expected league position, and explain why United are predicted to soar up the table and finish fifth by the end of the campaign.
Meanwhile, the stats from Infogol suggest Tottenham will have more trouble recovering from their tricky start to the campaign while things also look bleak for Watford fans.
And the title race is expected to go down to the wire – but who will finish top of the table based on Expected Goals?
