Luis Enrique announces tragic death of 9-year-old daughter
Manchester City are wearing black armbands for their match against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
The Citizens are wearing the armbands as a gesture towards the family of Luis Enrique.
The former Barcelona and Spain manager announced the death of his nine-year-old daughter, Xana, earlier this week.
She died from bone cancer after a five-month-long illness.
From Manchester City and my family, we are here, and hopefully soon I can see him and tell him how I love him and his family
Pep Guardiola sent love to Enrique after hearing the news, and told him that everyone at City was thinking of him.
“We knew it was not good, but always you dream everything is going well,” said Guardiola.
“I don’t have words, there is absolutely nothing to say.
“Always you try to find reasons why, but there is no argument for a little girl, only nine years old.
“From Manchester City and my family, we are here, and hopefully soon I can see him and tell him how I love him and his family.”
Enrique stepped down as Spain manager in June to spend time with his daughter after she was diagnosed with the cancer.
He described Xana as “the star that guides our family,” when he confirmed that she had passed away.
“We will miss you very much but we will remember you every day of our lives in the hope that in the future we will meet again.”
The Spanish Football Federation said it “mourns the sad loss of little Xana, only nine years old, daughter of the coach and international player with Spain, Luis Enrique Martínez.
“We want to show our condolences to family and friends, joining us all today to their pain.”
Barcelona’s rivals, Real Madrid, said they “join the pain” of Enrique.
The club said it “wants to convey their deepest condolences to them at these difficult times”.
