Chelsea cock-up in Super Cup against Liverpool with embarrassing blunder
CHELSEA suffered an embarrassing blunder in the Super Cup against Liverpool after spelling Jorginho’s name wrong on his shirt.
Chelsea: Jorginho earns first assist against Barcelona
Chelsea were handed a spanking on the opening Premier League weekend by Manchester United, losing 4-0.
They had a quick chance at redemption though in the Super Cup to try and beat Champions League winners Liverpool.
Frank Lampard made a number of changes, name Olivier Giroud, N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic being brought into the starting line-up.
But as the players lined up to start the game, Chelsea fans were quick to notice a surprising error on one of their players’ shirts.
Getting names spelt wrong is not often something professional footballers will have to contend with in their careers.
However, Jorginho had exactly that on his shirt with his name spelt ‘Jorghino’.
Still, the mistake didn’t appear to impact his performance in anyway as Chelsea’s midfield took control of the game.
Chelsea survived an early Liverpool appeal for a penalty but then the Blues took the initiative for the remainder of the first half.
Pedro struck the woodwork with a stinging left-foot strike and Chelsea continued to keep their foot on the gas before eventually finding the breakthrough.
Pulisic was causing Liverpool’s defence all sorts of problems and he played the ball through to Olivier Giroud who finished calmly past Adrian.
The American thought he had doubled Chelsea’s lead minutes later after cutting inside on his right foot before burying a low-driven shot deep in the bottom corner.
But the lineswoman flagged for offside after the ball hit the net with VAR proving it was the right decision.
