UEFA suffer Frank Lampard interview gaffe in Liverpool vs Chelsea Super Cup programme
CHELSEA boss Frank Lampard was asked a very awkward question in the UEFA Super Cup programme, ahead of their match against Liverpool, in a major gaffe that involved David Luiz.
Liverpool vs Chelsea: UEFA Super Cup clash previewed
Chelsea take on Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup tonight in Istanbul, as the winners of the Europa League take on the winners of the Champions League.
The competition is considered a showpiece curtain-raiser for the European competitions ahead.
But, Chelsea boss Lampard was the subject of a hilarious gaffe in the Super Cup match’s programme.
He was asked about how he intends to coach Luiz, despite the club selling him on deadline day to Arsenal.
Awkward question to Lampard in the programme
Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella tweeted an image of the programme, along with the caption: “Awkward question to Lampard in the programme.
“I guess they interviewed him before deadline day…”
The programme showed Lampard was asked: “Having played with Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz, how will you approach the job of coaching them?”
He responded: “They’re both hugely important.”
It appears the interview was conducted before deadline day - with the programme printed and put into circulation after Luiz's cross-London move too.
Chelsea sold Luiz to Arsenal on transfer deadline day last week, in an £8million deal.
The Brazilian signed a two-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, after being told that he wasn’t in Lampard’s plans.
Lampard reportedly told Luiz that he would struggle to break into his starting 11, and even struggle to make the bench.
The Chelsea boss appears to favour a centre-back partnership of Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, while Antonio Rudiger recovers from injury.
Luiz spent six-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge in total, with a spell at Paris Saint-Germain in between.
His departure came just five weeks after his former team-mate Lampard took the reins at Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Luiz didn’t feature for Arsenal in their opening Premier League match against Newcastle.
Gunners boss Unai Emery said Calum Chambers deserved to start the match ahead of the new signing, after having an impressive pre-season.
