The Magpies have ran medical checks on the striker who was released by West Ham at the end of last season.
Carroll has told his agent he is keen to return to the north east with Steve Bruce a fan of the 30-year-old.
However, there are concerns over the striker’s injury problems which have persisted throughout his career.
Carroll underwent ankle surgery earlier in the year and Newcastle are keen to establish exactly where he is in terms of his recovery, according to the Chronicle.
