Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals Man Utd captaincy update as he drops David de Gea hint
ASHLEY YOUNG will be Manchester United’s captain next season, but David De Gea could take the armband off him.
That’s according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United and David De Gea have been in discussions over a new contract throughout the summer, but there are still discussions over whether he will seal a new deal.
The goalkeeper was given the armband for United’s final pre-season game on Saturday against AC Milan.
However, Solskjaer confirmed afterwards that he will not be leading the team out all the time.
Instead, Young will be captaining the side whenever he plays, just as he did for parts of last season.
His playing time this campaign will be limited, however, after the club signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka for £50million.
For that reason, De Gea is likely to be handed the armband for large parts of the Premier League campaign.
“David's obviously in contention,” he said when asked about who could captain the team.
“Ash when he's on the pitch will carry the armband. When Ash starts he'll be carrying the armband.”
Solskjaer was then asked if that meant Young had officially replaced Antonio Valencia, who left the club at the end of last season.
And without officially confirming the decision, he replied: “You can probably call it that.”
After United’s pre-season game against Tottenham last week, Solskjaer discussed De Gea’s chances of being given the captaincy.
He expressed that there would be a decision made soon, and that he wanted someone vocal, like the goalkeeper.
“We've got different captain types,” Solskjaer said.
“There are vocal leaders and players like David, who has merit with what he's done and he'll play the majority of the games.”
