Park’s current £30,000-a-week deal runs out next summer and United’s delay in offering him a new contract sparked suggestions he could be leaving.
But United will clear up the uncertainty by offering him a new £60,000-a-week contract and chief executive David Gill said: “We have had discussions with him and told him we are going to do it, so we have left it like that for the moment. It won’t be done before the start of the season but pretty soon afterwards.”
Park, who launched his professional career in Japan, faces a big night tonight when he plays against FC Seoul – the first time he has played senior club football in his native country, where he receives David Beckham-style adulation .
Park said: “ It is particularly significant because I will be playing for my club and not the national team.”
