How Atletico Madrid may look on first day of next season – Griezmann out, five signings
ATLETICO MADRID have been busy in the transfer market this season with a host of signings and sales at the Wanda Metropolitano, but how will Diego Simeone's side line up next season?
Atletico have overhauled their squad this summer as Simeone plans another assault on the La Liga title, with the Argentine looking to replicate his side’s 2013/14 success.
Los Rojiblancos finished second behind Barcelona last season, 11 points off the pace but comfortably clear of rivals Real Madrid in third.
Simeone and the Atletico hierarchy have opted to splash the cash this summer in order to bridge the gap and replace several experienced squad members who have moved on.
Jan Oblak will continue in goal but Diego Godin called time on his Atletico career this summer, with the club captain joining Inter Milan on a free transfer after nine years in Madrid.
Fellow defenders Juanfran and Filipe Luis have also departed upon the expiration of their contracts, although neither currently have a club.
Meanwhile, left-back Lucas Hernandez has joined Bayern Munich in a deal worth £68million - freeing up funds for the arrivals of Felipe and Renan Lodi.
Former FC Porto ace Felipe is expected to slot straight into the starting XI alongside one of Jose Gimenez or Francisco Montero in central defence while Stefan Savic is another option and Mario Hermoso is also on the brink of joining from Espanyol.
Lodi has moved from Athletico Paranaense and will be used sparingly at left-back while £25m-signing Kieran Trippier could usurp Santiago Arias and the returning Sime Vrsaljko at right-back.
Manchester City have snapped up Rodri for £62.5m so former Real Madrid ace Marcos Llorente is likely to partner Saul Niguez in central midfield.
However, Hector Herrera has arrived on a free transfer from Porto while Thomas Partey provides excellent strength in depth.
Koke was deployed on the right of a four-man midfield last season while Thomas Lemar should operate on the other flank, although Vitolo and Angel Correa are further options out wide.
Finally, Antoine Griezmann has joined Barcelona for £107m - recouping much of the £113m fee spent on Joao Felix – while Alvaro Morata has completed a permanent move and should shoulder the attacking burden with Diego Costa seemingly heading for the exit.
Atletico Madrid predicted line-up in 2019/20
(4-4-2): Oblak; Trippier, Felipe, Hermoso, Lodi; Koke, Llorente, Saul, Lemar; Felix, Morata
