Man Utd urged to buy Koulibaly… but pundit then changes mind and backs a different signing
MANCHESTER UNITED would be better off signing Neymar than bolstering their defence with Kalidou Koulibaly, claims Liverpool legend Steve Nicol.
Man Utd: Nicol changes mind about Koulibaly addition
Nicol, who works as a pundit for ESPN FC, was asked if Manchester United should spend the majority of their transfer budget on improving their defence with Koulibaly or instead on Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar.
The Scot initially chose Koulibaly, claiming Neymar is not the type of player United need most at present.
He said: “At United? Right now? Probably Koulibaly. Right now, yeah.
“The problem is, who’s Neymar going to play with? Who have they got who would be on the same wavelength for a start?
Who’s Neymar going to play with? Who have they got who would be on the same wavelength for a start?
“The guy would lose his rag because he’ll be throwing his arms in the air every two minutes.
“Then he will be hogging the ball and getting kicked out of the game and then he’ll miss another half season. So I’ll go with Koulibaly.
“Listen, if it was Man United of Fergie’s era, then there’s no question it would be Neymar.
“But right now, with the mess they’re in, it would be Koulibaly.”
European football expert Sid Lowe then claimed people have forgotten how good Neymar is because of his controversies on and off the pitch.
And that was enough to change Nicol’s mind on who United should sign this summer.
“Do you know what Sid, I’ve always said you are the voice of reason,” Nicol replied.
“And do you know what, I’m going to change my mind. He’s right, he’s actually spot on.
“I keep seeing this guy [Neymar] who’s overdoing it in all the wrong areas, on the field, off the field.
“Sid’s right, you forget how good he is.
"I’m going to change my mind.”
