Why Romelu Lukaku has struggled at Man Utd as Inter Milan eye transfer deal
ROMELU LUKAKU is a transfer target for Inter Milan and Sky Sports pundit Tony Gale believes there is more than one reason he hasn’t been a success at Manchester United.
Man Utd: Romelu Lukaku will leave club says Moreno
The Belgian striker’s time at Old Trafford has stagnated, after what was initially an incredibly positive start under Jose Mourinho.
Now it looks more than likely that Lukaku could leave this summer, with Inter Milan preparing an offer involving a two-year loan with an obligation to buy.
Despite a purple patch in late February and early March, Lukaku is not Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice striker.
Marcus Rashford is expected to lead the line next season, which could signal the end of the £75million signing’s time at Manchester United.
Sky Sports pundit Tony Gale, thinks Lukaku doesn’t fit in with the style of play which is why he’s struggled to have a similar kind of impact to the one he had at Everton.
“It doesn’t seem to work for him at Manchester United,” told Sky Sports News.
“It doesn’t seem to work for him in the pattern of play and he’s a player for me that still scores goals.
“If you have a look at his scoring record it is terrific but you have to have a little bit more.
“It’s not just about how you can score a goal, it’s also about what you do in and around the team and how you integrate players.”
One of the criticisms Lukaku has faced, is that he seems to be a different player for the national team under Roberto Martinez.
Belgium play fast-paced attacking football, which clearly brings the best out of the 26-year-old.
“I do think he’s great when he’s running in behind but I think his hold up play can improve and that’s why he left Chelsea in the first place because when defences drop deep they try to play balls into him and it tended to come off of him too much,” Gale added.
“But he’s a player for me that has got lots of ability, but he just has to play in a team that suits his style of play.
Manchester United: Lukaku made transfer difficult says pundit
“He’s more suited really when you’re playing on the break.
“When he was playing against the big teams for Manchester United I thought he was doing well, because they tend to come onto you a bit more.
“Once he’s got you on his shoulder, you can’t really brush him away.
“When you play the lesser teams he has a little bit of a problem because he can’t receive that ball in there.”
