England team news: Predicted 4-3-3 line up to face Switzerland – Injury update on trio
ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate has fitness doubts over several members of his squad ahead of the Nations League third-place semi-final against Switzerland (2pm).
Nations League: Gareth Southgate previews ‘important’ match
England are looking to get back to winning ways after another disappointing semi-final defeat, losing 3-1 to Holland on Thursday.
Marcus Rashford put the Three Lions ahead from the penalty spot after a foul by Matthijs de Ligt but the Ajax defender equalised with a header after the break.
England then crumbled in extra time as mistakes from John Stones and Ross Barkley led to an own-goal by Kyle Walker and a tap-in for Quincy Promes.
Southgate now has to pick his team up for the third-place play-off but has admitted he will likely freshen up his squad, saying: “We’ll probably have to make some changes.
“We’ve got doubts over (Ben) Chilwell, Rashford, (Jordan) Henderson.
“There’s a few more to check. I don’t want to make wholesale changes.
“The importance of the match is clear for us and whoever comes in needs to come into a fairly stable line-up.”
Rashford was forced off at half-time against the Dutch with an ankle injury while Henderson was not risked from the off, having played 90 minutes in the Champions League final.
Nations League: England train ahead of third place play-off
A number of other players including Harry Kane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dele Alli all started in Madrid and should come back into the side here.
Danny Rose is likely to replace Chilwell at left-back while Stones could make way for Joe Gomez or Michael Keane in central defence.
Eric Dier is expected to anchor the midfield, having come on as a substitute in the Champions League final and watched from the sidelines against Holland.
In attack, Raheem Sterling will keep his place and should be joined by Jesse Lingard, who saw a goal against the Dutch ruled out for offside.
