England team news: Predicted 4-3-3 line up to face Switzerland – Liverpool stars recalled
ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate is likely to make a host of changes when the Three Lions face Switzerland in the Nations League third-place play-off.
England suffered semi-final heartbreak yet again as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Holland on Thursday, conceding two goals in extra time to deny them a spot in the inaugural Nations League final.
Marcus Rashford’s penalty put the Three Lions ahead but Matthijs de Ligt made amends for conceding the spot-kick by powerfully heading in an equaliser after the break.
Jesse Lingard had a late strike disallowed for offside before a nightmare mistake from John Stones saw the Dutch take the lead in the extra period as Kyle Walker bundled into his own net under pressure.
Another error from Ross Barkley allowed Quincy Promes to get on the scoresheet as England struggled to sustain a threat without a number of first-choice stars.
Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Danny Rose and Dele Alli all started the the Champions League final and were not risked from the off against Holland.
Joe Gomez and Eric Dier also came off the bench in Madrid and all seven players could come into Gareth Southgate’s starting XI on Sunday night.
Jack Butland may also stand in for Jordan Pickford between the posts while Stones is likely to drop out after a tough evening in Guimaraes.
Rashford will make way after suffering an ankle injury, while Southgate is concerned about Henderson’s hamstring although the Liverpool captain should play.
Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling are expected to retain their spots in the XI although Michael Keane and Callum Wilson are pushing to feature.
Speaking after the defeat in midweek, Southgate said: “We have to see who can go, and there are a couple of injuries, certainly a few with cramp, and we have to try to freshen it, and that’s our best chance of getting a result is to freshen it as much as possible.
“We have to do give everything. We have thousands of fans here, and we owe them that we give absolutely everything.
“The mentality of the group is we do that right the way through. It is no use complaining about it.”
