Celtic transfer news: Neil Lennon could miss out on Phil Jagielka after development
CELTIC are trying to sign Premier League veteran Phil Jagielka after the defender was released from Everton this season, it’s been claimed.
Celtic: Rebuilding squad will be a 'challenge' says Neil Lennon
Celtic are interested in signing former England international Jagielka, according to The Scottish Sun.
But the Hoops could miss out on the Premier League veteran, as Sheffield United may choose to bring him back for another spell at Bramall Lane.
The 36-year-old was released from Everton this week as he looks for more game time.
Jagielka made just seven appearances for the Toffees this season, after 12-year stay at Goodison Park.
Celtic wanted to sign the former-Sheffield United defender in January
He could now be moving to Celtic Park in search of regular game time, as Neil Lennon is keen on recruiting Jagielka to his squad.
Celtic wanted to sign the former-Sheffield United defender in January, it added.
But, Everton boss Marco Silva was reluctant to let him go in case either of the starting centre-backs picked up an injury.
There are likely to be a number of teams that would happily take Jagielka, even at this stage of his career.
Sheffield United may be a potential suitor, as boss Chris Wilder could look to add some experience to his team ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Jagielka announced he was leaving Everton on Tuesday (June 4).
“It’s been hard to confirm my situation for next season, as that decision hadn’t been fully made by the club until now,” he said.
“Unfortunately my journey at Everton has come to an end after 12 fantastic seasons.
“I have been lucky enough to play over 380 games and lucky enough to be club captain for six years.
“All I can say is thanks to all the players I’ve played along side, all the staff that have helped me in their own way, The Chairman and of course the AMAZING fans.
“Wishing everyone associated with this special club the very best for the future.”
Meanwhile, Lennon has already revealed that he plans on making a few changes to the Celtic squad this summer.
While wholesale changes aren’t needed, the Scottish champions will be looking to sign more “forward-thinking” players, he said.
