Man City: Fernandes transfer 'depends on Sane' says pundit
The club have created a history with failed signings in recent years including Alexis Sanchez, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Memphis Depay.
But this time around, poor recruitment will see them fall even further behind the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, something they simply can't afford to do.
United need to add quality to midfield, particularly in attacking sense. A new No 10 would be most welcome at Old Trafford among supporters.
So who fits the bill and where should Solskjaer be looking?
Bruno Fernandes would add some much-needed creativity in midfield.
The 24-year-old has scored 20 goals and assisted 13 times in the Primeira Liga this season with Sporting.
He is also the captain of the side and would bring leadership qualities that United have been starved of in recent times.
Man City have also been linked with a move but it doesn't look like they're prepared to follow up their interest.

James Maddison
His importance to Leicester after just one season is telling, after making the step up from the Championship look so comfortable.
Solskjaer has spoken publicly that he wants to sign young players who are committed to the club for the long-term.
Maddison is only 22-years-old, English and a dead-ball specialist.
There's every reason why Solskjaer should make him a top target, as speculation linking the midfielder with a move north intensifies.
