ARSENAL head coach Unai Emery HUMILIATED Mesut Ozil during the Europa League final loss to Chelsea, claims talkSPORT host Adrian Durham.
Arsenal: Ozil HUMILIATED by Emery claims pundit
Arsenal lost 4-1 to Chelsea in Baku on Wednesday to end their Champions League qualification hopes.
Mesut Ozil was taken off after 77 minutes with the German replaced by 19-year-old Joe Willock.
Durham says the fact he was replaced by a teenager in a major final was humiliating for the German.
Ozil is Arsenal’s highest paid player on £350,000-a-week and Durham believes Arsenal should subsidise his wages to get him out of the club.
It was humiliating Ozil, making him walk off and be replaced by a teenager. It’s exactly what Ozil deserved
He said: “Let’s start by talking about Mesut Ozil, many feel he didn’t even play last night. He was on the pitch.
“I thought it was the ultimate humiliation and I actually thought that Unai Emery was making a clear point to Mesut Ozil by taking him off with, what, 20 minutes left and bringing on a teenager.
“Credit to the teenager, I thought he did well, Willock, when he came on, I thought he did okay.
“Certainly did more in the 20 than Ozil had done in the 70.
“But for Unai Emery to do that in a major final, it was the right thing to do, I’m not criticising the manager, but I also think he wanted to improve things on the pitch, it got a little bit better, but I think he was just hammering home a point to Mesut Ozil.
“It was humiliating Ozil, making him walk off and be replaced by a teenager.
“It’s exactly what Ozil deserved.
“While he’s at Arsenal, I thought it will always be a negative.
“For Arsenal fans, some of them do harp on about it, ‘oh he’s a World Cup winner, he won the World Cup with Germany’.
“That’s fine, it’s a fact, it happened. But it was five years ago and what’s he done of significance at Arsenal since then?
“So I think they need to pay him to leave.”
