Chelsea fans FUME as Manchester City label Frank Lampard a ‘City legend’
CHELSEA fans were left fuming on Friday as Manchester City labeled Frank Lampard a ‘City legend’ despite him playing only 38 times for the club.
Chelsea: Frank Lampard ‘needs a couple more years’ says pundit
Chelsea fans were responding to Manchester City’s tweet that marked four years since Lampard’s final appearance for the Sky Blues - in which he scored against Southampton.
Although the Derby boss was called a ‘City legend’ it was accompanied by the eyes emoji, suggesting that it was intended to be taken as a joke.
However, fans of the west London club didn’t see the funny side, with one fan calling their Premier League rivals ‘pathetic’.
One supporter said: “Weird, grim club.”
“Man City is a tinpot club with zero legends,” said another.
A third added: “Man city now stealing legends.”
“He ain't your legend,” said a fourth.
Chelsea hero Lampard is the Blues record scorer having scored 211 times in 648 games.
The ex-England international joined the club in 2001 from West Ham and went on to gain a cult hero status at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard left London in 2014 in a proposed deal to sign for New York City FC, before he made a controversial Premier League return.
The midfielder scored eight goals during his year in Manchester, including a late equaliser against Chelsea at the Etihad.
“It was tough, it was really tough, listen, I had to do my job,” Lampard told Copa90 about that strike.
“Everyone tells me they had a feeling I was going to score, I only came on for 20 minutes. It’s one of those things that happens in football.
“The Chelsea fans were incredible for me and going to Man City was a massive choice for me.
“I didn’t want to lose 13 years, I had a great bond with the Chelsea fans, and I was like ‘ah, is this going to taint 13 years?’
“I loved my time at City, and scoring that goal, I was concerned how it would be but reaction afterwards was incredible, and since then.”
