Four players Liverpool were interested in last summer who they could revisit this year
LIVERPOOL are expected to enjoy a low-key transfer window this summer, but could they finally snap up some of their targets from previous years?
Liverpool enjoyed a stellar season as they pushed Manchester City all the way in the Premier League title race.
The Reds eventually finished a single point behind Pep Guardiola’s men but are in the Champions League final and have a healthy squad set to challenge for honours again next term.
However, manager Jurgen Klopp will be keen for his side not to rest on their laurels and a return to previous transfer targets could be on the cards now that Liverpool are a more attractive club to prospective new arrivals.
Express Sport have outlined four deals that the Reds could resurrect, having fallen through last summer.
Nabil Fekir
The French midfielder was the big transfer story of last summer, with the saga eventually ending in disappointment for Reds fans as Fakir stayed put.
According to his agent, Fekir passed a medical with Liverpool and even had pictures taken in a playing shirt before the plug was pulled on a deal.
The 25-year-old has a year left on his current deal but L’Equipe suggest a gentleman’s agreement is in place which would allow the Lyon captain to leave.
Fekir has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season and would add creativity to the Liverpool midfield, although he would likely cost a similar fee to the £53million agreed last year.
Adrien Rabiot
Rabiot has been attracting attention from several high-profile European clubs as his contract runs down at Paris Saint-Germain.
The Frenchman will be available for free this summer and is thought to be a Liverpool fan, while Klopp reportedly expressed interest in signing him last summer.
Juventus are said to have tabled an offer while Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea are also in for Rabiot, who would add even more strength in depth to the Reds midfield.
The 24-year-old’s contract demands are likely to be high, although it would be foolish not to consider signing such a talented player on the cheap.
Timo Werner
RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has admitted Liverpool are still battling Bayern Munich for Werner, who is seen as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski at the Bavarian club.
The 23-year-old has been offered an extension but wants to move on, with Mintzlaff suggesting Munich, PSG and Borussia Dortmund could also be options in addition to Liverpool.
Klopp need attacking reinforcements but would have to alter his preferred formation in order to accommodate Werner alongside regular striker Roberto Firmino.
Meanwhile, BBC journalist David Ornstein claims neither Werner or Fekir are targets for Liverpool this summer and believes a versatile full-back is a higher priority.
Julian Brandt
Brandt was seen as a top target for Liverpool before the signing of Mohamed Salah, but the 23-year-old opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen to be sure of first-team football.
The winger has a £21.5m release clause and would be difficult to prise away from the Bundesliga due to his five-year contract and agent fees.
However, Klopp may reignite interest in the versatile attacker as he attempts to build a squad that can continue competing on multiple fronts.
Ornstein, though, claims a deal for Brandt is dead in the water after the German attracted plenty of attention from Liverpool in previous windows.
