Manchester United have ‘good chance’ of signing Matthijs de Ligt on ONE condition - Nicol
MANCHESTER UNITED have a “good chance” of signing Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt if he is money-oriented over his next move.
Man Utd: De Ligt transfer ‘depends on money’ says Nicol
That is the opinion of Liverpool legend and ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol.
De Ligt is attracting interest from the biggest clubs across Europe after a fine season at Ajax.
The 19-year-old Netherlands international has led his side to the semi-final of the Champions League, where they faced Tottenham in the second leg on Wednesday leading 1-0.
De Ligt has been most linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.
If he’s a guy who just wants to take the most that’s available, then there’s a good chance he could go to United
He would be following Ajax team-mate Frenkie de Jong who has already agreed to move to the Nou Camp in the summer.
Nicol admits Manchester United, who will miss out on Champions League qualification, need to spend big in improving their squad.
He says if De Ligt is picking the club who will offer the most money, then United could get land the exciting centre-back.
However, Nicol doubts whether De Ligt would choose financial gain over the chance of playing for a top Champions League club.
“This depends on De Ligt, whether he’s interested in the money or not,” Nicol said.
“If his goal is football, he’s one of those smart guys that understands regardless of where you go you’re still going to get a lot of money.
“If he’s a guy who just wants to take the most that’s available, then there’s a good chance he could go to United.
“If it’s just about the money, because Man United right now have to splash the cash and they have to get quality.
“And this guy De Ligt, what 19 years old, that means he could possibly be your centre-back at the highest level for the next decade.
“That’s worth paying for.
“But, I’m not so sure this guy is just all about the money.
“And that means Manchester United will miss out on De Ligt.”
