How Arsenal lost the chance to sell Mesut Ozil in January - Unai Emery wants star to leave
ARSENAL could have sold Mesut Ozil in January, after it was revealed Unai Emery wants the German playmaker to leave. Where could he have gone?
Arsenal: Mesut Ozil did 'NOTHING' against Wolves says fan
Mesut Ozil has been sitting on a £350,000-a-week contract at Arsenal for the best part of 18 months.
But, the club’s highest paid player has only made 24 Premier League appearances this season.
Arsenal fans are divided on the German playmaker’s influence, after flashes of brilliance, and subsequently laziness.
Unai Emery lost out on the chance to offload Ozil in the January transfer window, it’s been claimed.
Last winter, Antero Henrique had tried to bring Mesut Ozil
Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign Ozil in the last transfer window, according to Paris United.
The club’s director of football wanted to bring in the midfielder to bolster their hopes of Champions League glory.
But the deal subsequently fell through, with Ozil hapy to remain an Arsenal player for at least another six months.
“Note that last winter, Antero Henrique had tried to bring Mesut Ozil, but he had declined for our greatest happiness,” their report said.
Meanwhile, Express Sport understands that Unai Emery is happy for Ozil to leave Arsenal.
It’s become apparent that Ozil doesn’t fit into Emery’s style of play, and is more reliant on other attacking options.
Ozil could be one of a number of Arsenal players that are shown the door this summer, as Emery tries to make his mark on the squad.
But, speaking earlier this month, Ozil said that he’s happy as part of the Arsenal squad, and plans to see out his contract.
His mega-money deal is due to expire in the summer of 2021.
“Absolutely. I've got two more years on my contract,” he told Sky Sports when asked if he wants to stay.
“I don't know after that but I've got two years left.
“I’m 30 now, still got years in front of me, it's down to the club as well of course, but I've got two years here - after that I don't know what happens.”
He’s also rubbished claims that he’s had a disagreement with Emery.
Arsenal have once again missed out on a top four finish, and are set to take part in the Europa League for another season - unless they win the competition this year.
They travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley for the final game of the Premier League season on Sunday.
