Championship table LATEST: How standings look with Leeds, Aston Villa and Derby to play
THE CHAMPIONSHIP concluded today with Derby, Middlesbrough and Bristol City battling for a last-ditch playoff place and Norwich and Sheffield United deciding the destiny of the title. Here’s how the final day progressed.
The Championship had an enthralling final day as Derby sealed an EFL playoff place in sixth and a date with third-placed Leeds.
West Brom and Aston Villa had already sealed playoff spots thanks to the goalscoring feats of Jay Rodriguez, Dwight Gayle and Tammy Abraham, but Derby could have been displaced by either of their rivals should they fail to beat the Baggies at Pride Park.
Middlesbrough failed to reach the playoffs despite Tony Pulis’s side's win at relegated Rotherham.
Bristol City, who had faint hope of finishing in the top six with an unlikely sequence of results, also missed out on the Championship playoffs.
At the top of the Championship table, Aston Villa lost to Norwich in a match that would have seen Dean Smith's men finish fifth irrespective of the result at Villa Park.
Norwich guaranteed the Championship title with the win, while Premier League-bound Sheffield United finished second.
Leeds finished third in the Championship after a 3-2 defeat at bottom side Ipswich, West Brom's loss to Derby ensuring they remained in fourth.
There was nothing to play for at the bottom of the Championship, with the Tractor Boys, beleaguered Bolton - 1-0 losers at Nottingham Forest - and the third-bottom Millers already consigned to League One next season.
