Champions League: Pundits react to Juventus loss to Ajax
Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be adding anymore Champions League goals to his tally after Juventus were stunned 2-1 by Ajax last night.
Ronaldo did give Juventus the lead after 28 minutes with a record 126th goal in the competition, his ninth in seven meetings against the Dutch side.
But goals from Donny Van De Beek and Matthijs De Ligt gave Ajax a thoroughly deserved 3-2 aggregate success.
Ronaldo was signed by Juventus last summer in the hopes he could lead them to European glory.
But boss Massimiliano Allegri denies the club have been over-dependent on the Portuguese star.
Allegri said: "He has given us a lot over the course of the campaign, but when you reach the quarter-final, you need every player."
Lionel Messi, meanwhile, delivered another reminder of his enduring star quality as Barcelona quashed Manchester United's hopes of another improbable Champions League comeback at the Nou Camp.
The Premier League side had overcome a two-goal deficit at Paris Saint-Germain last month but Messi's first-half brace and a brilliant strike from Philippe Coutinho ushered Barcelona towards a 3-0 victory, 4-0 on aggregate, at the ground of one of United’s greatest triumphs.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "Messi is an exceptional talent, him and Cristiano (Ronaldo) have been the best players in the world in the last decade.
"He showed why we all think that and why he's won so many titles and why this team have won so many Champions Leagues (four since 2006).
"You can prepare as much as you like, if you give him space and time around the goal he'll create and score goals, he's a fantastic player."
