Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt sends Manchester City, Tottenham warning after Juventus win
AJAX wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt insisted the Dutch giants are still not completely satisfied, despite having dumped out Champions League favourites Juventus on Tuesday night.
de Ligt scored the winner for Ajax at the Allianz Stadium, as his side progressed to the last eight of the competition.
For reference, the last time Ajax made it this far, de Ligt was still two years away from being born.
The 19-year-old is the youngest captain in the club’s history and showed his maturity in Tuesday night’s win against Juve.
de Ligt popped up with a powerful header after 67 minutes to turn the game in his side’s favour, giving Ajax the edge going into the closing stages of the game.
Instead of sitting back on the lead, Ajax continued to play simple football and added a third goal through Hakim Ziyech before the effort was chalked off through VAR.
And the youngster, apparently bound for Barcelona in the summer, discussed Ajax’s chances of going all the way.
“Can we can go on to win the competition? Well, we are in the semi-finals now,” he said.
“And we have eliminated two of the favourites in the last two rounds.
“The next games will be very difficult, but so were these ones. So who knows?
“I can’t describe the emotions we are feeling now - it’s unbelievable. We don’t know what we can achieve but we are never satisfied.”
Ajax will now take on either Manchester City or Tottenham in the next round, as the two English sides go head-to-head tonight.
And de Ligt believes that his team-mates are showing that they are a force to be reckoned with.
“There’s so much potential in this team, we are all still quite young and you see us grow every game,” he continued.
“We dominated after the break and were well worth our victory.
“In fact, we probably should have won by more.”
