Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp opens up on Mohamed Salah breaking his goal drought
MOHAMED SALAH remaining calm was the key to ending his goal drought, according to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
Salah scored his 50th goal for The Reds on Friday night as he scored the second in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Southampton.
The win took Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League, two points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
With just five games remaining, Liverpool fans will be relieved that Salah has found his form at the most crucial part of the season.
The Egyptian had gone six games without scoring, his last goal coming in February against Bournemouth.
But he broke his drought in the best way possible, as he picked up the ball inside his own half before charging at the Southampton defence and firing home his effort from the edge of the area.
The relief on Salah’s face was clear to see, as he whipped off his shirt and stood proudly in front of the travelling Liverpool fans, who were going crazy in the away end at St Mary’s.
Speaking after the match, Klopp couldn’t hide his pleasure with Salah, and opened up on how the forward had dealt with his goal drought.
“It was never in doubt about being a great player from my side,” he said.
“It was goal number 50 for Liverpool - that’s an incredible number.
“As a striker you have chances, each striker is a human being as well, maybe you have better moments and less good moments.
“But he is pretty consistent, his physical things are always there, but it’s normal.
“He stayed always calm to deal with the situations around us.
“If it’s a big thing we don’t really care about it but it’s a nice moment for his first goal for a while, a really good moment.”
With just a handful of games remaining, Klopp set his side the target of winning every game until the end of the season.
“It was very big. Every game is massive,” he continued.
“We've got to win every game.
“It was a big performance in the second half and a big result."
