Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson reveals who he would bet on to win Premier League title
LIVERPOOL legend Mark Lawrenson has revealed who he thinks will win the Premier League this season.
Premier League: Mark Lawrenson claims Man City will win title
Lawrenson won five First Division titles with Liverpool during his glittering nine-year spell at Anfield in the 1980s.
However, the Reds have only won the league once since the former defender hung up his boots in 1989.
Liverpool are currently top of the table, two points clear of second-placed Manchester City, though City do have a game in hand.
And if Lawrenson was to put his neck on the line, the former defender would back Pep Guardiola’s side over the Reds.
If I was a betting man, and you know that I’m not, I would have a pound on Manchester City winning it
“If I was a betting man, and you know that I’m not, I would have a pound on Manchester City winning it,” Lawrenson told Premier League Productions.
The Premier League returns this weekend, with Liverpool hosting Tottenham on Sunday and City travelling to Fulham a day earlier.
And Lawrenson says he can see Jurgen Klopp's outfit slipping up against Spurs and Chelsea.
“Everyone says you’ve got easier fixtures, well they’re only easy if you’re playing well,” he continued.
“And they’ve got both Tottenham, this weekend, and Chelsea at home.
“If Tottenham and Chelsea come and play really well, you could see them both nicking a point.
“But the way they’re playing the two of them, the points count between the two of them will be sensational by the tome the season finishes, probably the best ever.”
Some members of City’s squad have won three Premier League titles with the club and Lawrenson believes that experience can give City an advantage.
However, he does not think going without silverware would be bad news for Klopp.
“A little bit [of a benefit to City that they have won it before],” Lawrenson said.
“Obviously everyone’s fully aware now 1990 was the last time Liverpool won the title.
“It’s brought up every year and it’s ‘Does Klopp need to win a trophy to keep his job?’.
“No, as long as he gets in the Champions League positions which he already is. It’s not an issue.”
