Did you see Arsenal star Mesut Ozil suffer THIS embarrassing moment against Rennes?
MESUT OZIL had a rather embarrassing moment during Arsenal’s match against Rennes on Thursday.
Arsenal vs Rennes: Players train at home camp ahead of clash
Ozil started the Europa League last-16 second leg clash at the Emirates, making it three starts in a row for the German.
Arsenal needed to overturn the 3-1 first leg deficit they conceded in France last week.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal an early lead but it was their second goal that provided a moment Ozil will want to forget.
Aubameyang crossed in from the left and Ainsley Maitland-Niles headed home to double his side’s lead.
Can we just quickly see Ozil switching off in the box, because it did make us laugh didn’t it
But replays showed Mesut Ozil, who was in the 18-yard area, turned his back on the play, thinking Aaron Ramsey’s pass to Aubameyang was going out of play.
At half time, BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey was keen to point out what happened.
“Can we just quickly see Ozil switching off in the box, because it did make us laugh didn’t it," Humphrey said.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown responded: “It did.
“It’s one of those where Maitland-Niles does especially well with this one because he doesn’t switch off.
“Ozil just thinks it’s over, the young man doesn’t.”
Ex-Gunners striker John Hartson was working alongside Keown and Humphrey said: “Good lesson for young players right John.”
Hartson had sympathy for Ozil and praised his first-half display.
“Yeah don’t switch off,” the Welshman said.
“Ozil, there, you can see, all of a sudden when he scores he just turns around.
“I actually think Ozil’s played really well. He’s got in some good positions.”
Arsenal won the game 3-0 and have qualified for the quarter-final stages.
