Ronaldo mocks Simeone, Man City time issues: THREE things you missed from Champions League
JUVENTUS and Manchester City progressed into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday in a dramatic night of European action.
Ronaldo: Pundits praise performance against Atletico Madrid
Juventus, who were 2-0 down to Atletico Madrid heading into the second leg, needed a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo to make it through.
Ronaldo netted two headers before a late penalty in Turin sealed Juve’s place in the last eight.
It was a bit more simple for Man City, who headed to the Etihad with a 3-2 lead over Schalke. And City made it double figures on aggregate, winning 7-0 on the night with Leroy Sane starring as he scored one and made three assists.
But among all the Champions League drama, what did you miss? Here, Express Sport looks at three things that may have slipped by.
Ronaldo mocks Simeone
After the first leg in Madrid, Atletico boss Diego Simeone made a gesture that landed him in some trouble.
The manager grabbed at his crotch to show his side had “cojones”.
Simeone was charged with improper conduct for that gesture but, having knocked Atletico out with a hat-trick, Ronaldo seemed to copy the move.
But the Argentine understood Ronaldo’s gesture as he said: “He will have seen how I did it at the Wanda Metropolitano and, like me, was trying to show his character.”
Man City time issues
There were seven goals at the Etihad on Tuesday night with four of those coming in the second half.
Both Manchester City and Schalke used all three substitutes available to them too, all coming after half-time.
But even so, referee Clement Turpin blew the full-time whistle on the 90 minute mark.
No added time after four goals and six substitutes seems strange to us, regardless of the score.
Antoine Griezmann admission
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann would have headed to Turin reasonably confident his side would progress. But then they bumped into Cristiano Ronaldo.
And the French star admitted his side weren’t at their best while praising Ronaldo.
Griezmann said: “In the first leg he did not have any chances, he had three today and scored three.
“We didn’t play our game, we chose the wrong day to screw it up. Everyone is annoyed, I’m the first one, I feel guilty because I didn’t make a difference like I did in the first leg.”
