And all eyes were on the Portuguese for his match-winning display in Turin.
Ronaldo scored three goals to reverse the 2-0 advantage Atletico had over Juventus heading into the second leg.
He was also called up for a foul on Jan Oblak as Giorgio Chiellini scored what could have been a crucial goal, with referee Bjoern Kuipers using VAR to confirm the decision.
But the big moment of the night came just after half time, when Ronaldo headed home his second to make it 2-2 on aggregate.
Ronaldo had already scored one header when he nodded goal wards a cross on 49 minutes - only for Oblak to claw the chance away.
On first glance it appeared as though Oblak had saved the shot with a spectacular dive and parry.
But referee Kuipers blew his whistle, indicating the goal!
Juventus players and fans seemed at first surprised - before then breaking into celebrations.
And Kuipers was seen directly pointing to his watch, signalling a buzz had come through to confirm the ball had gone over the line.
The Champions League has used goal line technology since 2016, while VAR only made its entrance to the competition in the knockout stages this term.
Juve went on to beat Atletico 3-2 on aggregate thanks to a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.
After the game Ronaldo said: “It had to be a special night and it was. This is the mentality you need in the Champions League.

“This is the mentality you need in the Champions League and we are on the right track.
“This is why Juve brought me in, to help on magic nights like this. Atleti are a really tough team to face, but we are strong too and proved we deserved to go through.
“It’s too early to talk about the final, let’s take it one step at a time.”
