Man Utd would be 'DEMENTED' if they give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer job - here's why
MANCHESTER UNITED giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the managerial job full-time would be ‘demented’, despite the Norwegian having won 14 of his first 17 games in charge.
That’s the view of ESPN’s Gab Marcotti, who believes the decision should be made in the summer instead.
United take on Arsenal today with a chance to strengthen their grip on fourth place in the Premier League table.
When Solskjaer took over, United were in sixth place and 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool, but they are now just three points off third place.
They are also through to the Champions League quarter-finals, and will face Wolves in the last eight of the FA Cup.
Fans are desperate for the Norwegian to be given the job full-time, especially as previous bookies’ favourite Mauricio Pochettino has struggled in recent weeks with Tottenham.
But despite this, Marcotti declared that there is no way that United should give the former striker the job now.
“There’s no question that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done a tremendous job, he’s surpassed all expectations,” he said.
“Mike Phelan with him has been a big part of it.
“But you’d be an absolute fool to give Solskjaer the job now.
“You stick to your original plan, you go out there and see what you can get, who is realistically available, how much it will cost, and you make a decision at the end of May.
“If it’s still Solskjaer, it’s still Solskjaer.
“I would feel a lot better with a director of football, but that wasn’t part of the question.
“It’s demented to go out there now and make a commitment to Solskjaer.”
United are within touching distance of third place after Tottenham’s defeat to Southampton on Saturday.
But Solskjaer will be without Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata for today’s trip to The Emirates.
