Tottenham player ratings vs Arsenal: Vertonghen nightmare, unlikely midfield ace stands up
TOTTENHAM suffered a nightmare against Arsenal in the north London derby, but did any of Mauricio Pochettino’s men perform at the Emirates?
Tottenham slipped to a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Arsenal as the Gunners leapfrogged their rivals in the Premier League table.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Jan Vertonghen’s handball but Eric Dier equalised with a header following Christian Eriksen’s free-kick.
Dier’s celebrations sparked a touchline melee before Harry Kane put the visitors in front, converting a penalty of his own after Rob Holding’s foul on Son Heung-min.
Arsenal struck back with second-half goals from Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira while Vertonghen was sent off late in a thrilling clash.
Express Sport has rated how the Tottenham players performed during their clash with Tottenham, but do you agree?
Tottenham Hotspur player ratings vs Arsenal – Premier League
GK: Hugo Lloris – 5
No chance with Aubameyang’s penalty and was rooted to the spot for the Gabon international’s second.
Caught out by a deflection for Lacazette’s goal and got nowhere near Torreira’s strike.
Lloris did make a couple of decent stops, but they will be quickly forgotten in the aftermath of this defeat.
RB: Serge Aurier – 5
Exposed positionally on occasions and went in the book for a clumsy hack late on.
CB: Juan Foyth – 4
Directly at fault for Arsenal’s third which changed the game.
Was doing okay up until that point, but the Argentine’s mistake triggered his side’s collapse.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 2
Ridiculous handball to concede the penalty and then bookended a bad day with his second yellow and an early bath.
LB: Ben Davies – 5
Pinned back by a rampant Arsenal attack, but did make a fantastic sliding block to keep Bellerin out in the first half.
CM: Eric Dier – 4
Gifted a goal by poor work from Bernd Leno then stoked the flames with an exuberant celebration in front of the home support.
Slotted into a back three but looked vulnerable, deflecting the ball past Lloris before selling himself for Arsenal’s fourth.
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 6
Rebuilding his reputation at Spurs and can hold his head up high after this performance.
Full of running despite his busy schedule and tried to stand toe-to-toe with a dominant Arsenal midfield.
So often the scapegoat, but not at fault today.
RAM: Christian Eriksen – 5
Provided the assist for Dier with a wicked free-kick but couldn’t get hold of the ball and dictate things after the break.
CAM: Dele Alli – 5
Gave as good as he got for an hour as the Gunners targeted him, and performed his defensive duties with a goal-line block from Shkodran Mustafi.
LAM: Son Heung-min – 7
Utilised his pace to cause problems and forced Leno into a couple of smart stops.
Drew the foul from Holding for the penalty but was gradually crowded out before his substitution.
ST: Harry Kane – 5
Never looked like missing his penalty and was denied a second by a smart Leno save from a free-kick.
However, chances were at a premium in the second half.
SUB: Harry Winks (on for Alli, 78 mins) – 6
Got riled up at Xhaka and threw himself about, but the game had already gone.
SUB: Lucas Moura (on for Son, 78 mins) – 5
Barely got a kick.
SUB: Danny Rose (on for Davies, 81 mins) – N/A
Allowed Davies an early bath.
