Man Utd transfer news: ‘Why mess with something that is working?’ - rumour questioned
BORUSSIA DORTMUND must not sell Axel Witsel to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
That is the opinion of ESPN FC pundit and former Major League Soccer star Alejandro Moreno.
Belgium international midfielder Witsel has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks.
The 29-year-old only joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer from Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian.
However, he has impressed for the Bundesliga side and helped them reach the top of the table after 12 games.
They may want Axel Witsel but if you’re Borussia Dortmund, why?
United have had a worse start in the Premier League, sitting seventh after 13 matches having already lost four times.
Manager Jose Mourinho appears to be keen to go back into the transfer market when the window opens in January.
But Moreno does not understand why Dortmund would allow Witsel to go and questions why the player would want a move to Old Trafford.
“They may want Axel Witsel but if you’re Borussia Dortmund, why?” Moreno said.
“Why would you get rid of a guy that is important to what you’re doing.
“By the way you’re first in the Bundesliga, why mess with something that is working?
“I think this is a miss from the perspective of Borussia Dortmund.
“I think this is a miss from the perspective of Axel Witsel as well.”
Witsel started his career in Belgium with Standard Liege and has also had spells at Benfica and Zenit St Petersburg.
He left for China in 2017 before returning earlier this year with Dortmund.
Witsel has scored three goals in his first 18 appearances for them.
He has won 101 caps for his country, finding the net on nine occasions.
