Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho receives transfer update from Juventus - was Pogba involved?
MANCHESTER UNITED have been told Juventus will NOT be selling Joao Cancelo after the Red Devils enquired about the defender.
Mourinho backing of Pogba penalties sparks fan OUTRAGE
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in defensive recruits in January.
The boss was unable to fully strengthen his squad in the summer and Diogo Dalot was the sole defensive addition made.
Cancelo could line up against United in the Champions League next week, having already impressed at Old Trafford in Juve’s 1-0 win last month.
But he won’t be joining United any time soon.
That is according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, who claim Mourinho has seen his advances for the defender snubbed.
It is claimed the Manchester United boss was hoping his agent Jorge Mendes - who also looks after Cancelo - could make the deal happen.
But Juve are in no mood to sell a player they signed from Valencia just a few months ago.
Cancelo arrived in Turin this summer for a £35.4m (€40.4m) fee, having spent last season on loan at Inter Milan.
The Portugal international is seen as a vital cog in manager Max Allegri’s side this season as Juve go for the Serie A title and Champions League.
Tuttosport claim United requested information about Cancelo but Juve hit back, saying he is not available in January or at the end of the season.
Cancelo is contracted to Juve for five years and the Serie A club see no reason to let him go just yet.
The transfer claim comes amid speculation that Juve themselves are trying to sign Paul Pogba in January.
Pogba left Juve for United in a then-world record £89m transfer in the summer of 2016.
But the Frenchman has blown hot and cold at Old Trafford and there are persistent rumours he could be set to leave.
There has been further speculation that Alex Sandro could be used in a player-plus-cash deal to lure Pogba to the Allianz Stadium.
But for now it appears as though Juve would not consider Cancelo to be a viable alternative.
