Man Utd goal: Was Marcos Alonso INJURED in Anthony Martial goal against Chelsea?
MANCHESTER UNITED scored a crucial goal at Chelsea today - but there was major controversy over the strike.
Chelsea were 1-0 up and looking comfortable when Anthony Martial lashed home an equaliser early in the second half.
But should the goal have stood?
In the build-up to the strike, Marcos Alonso went down injured in the Chelsea area.
It meant the Blues had to drop deep in order to prevent Alonso playing United’s forwards onside.
United capitalised on the Spaniard’s prone position and peppered the box with a ball which eventually fell to Martial to lash home.
But there are question marks over whether or not United should have put the ball out.
Common courtesy suggests footballers do put the ball out of play when players are injured.
But in recent years players have been urged to continue playing unless the referee stops proceedings.
That was encouraged in an effort to stop players feigning injury in order to waste time or break up play.
Alonso appeared to get to his feet OK after the goal and was fit to continue.
Martial popped up with United’s second on 73 minutes to put the visitors ahead in west London.
