Jose Mourinho HAPPY with Manchester United bore draw - Rio Ferdinand explains why
JOSE MOURINHO will be happy with Manchester United's 0-0 draw at home to Valencia.
That is the view of former England defender Rio Ferdinand.
The ex-Manchester United centre-back now works for BT Sport on their Champions League coverage, and watched as the Red Devils played out a drab 0-0 draw on Tuesday night.
That result marked United’s fourth match in a row without a win.
Mourinho’s side definitely offered more going forward, with 18 shots compared to Valencia’s nine, though neither side could break the deadlock.
Despite this seemingly poor result, which saw them slip to second in their Champions League group and booed off the pitch by the home fans, Ferdinand insisted it isn’t all doom and gloom.
He explained that Mourinho will have been pleased with the result.
“After the current form United are in it's difficult to expect them to get a result out of that,” he said.
“It's a draw at home, they'd of liked a win obviously but Mourinho will be happy with that.”
Mourinho’s future at United seems precarious, and some bookies believe he will be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.
Before the match, Ferdinand expressed a different opinion, however.
He suggested that Mourinho wants to be sacked by the club.
“That’s what it seems like to me,” he said.
“Some of his actions, some of the things that he says.
“You lose the game (at West Ham) 3-1 and it’s evident to everybody in that stadium or anyone around the world that watched that game that the attitude of the players and the intensity that they played, was wrong. It was off.”
Post-match, Mourinho admitted he never feared defeat against Valencia.
He did, however, say that his side needed to create more chances.
“It was a difficult game against a good opponent,” he told MUTV.
“We could have won, I don’t feel we could have lost, given the solid way the team was playing.
“We raised the bar in terms of the team effort, commitment, intensity and desire, but we didn’t score.
“We didn’t have enough chances but we had a couple, we weren’t far from.”
